What this site is
Most people shop for a water heater once a decade, usually after the old one leaks. This site answers the questions that come up then: what size, which fuel, what it costs, and how to make the next tank last longer with the anode rod, flushing, the expansion tank and the relief valve.
How we choose
We have not tested these products ourselves. Nothing on this site claims hands-on testing, lab results or scores of our own. Instead:
- Sizing comes from the Department of Energy. The calculator uses the gallons per use in the DOE Energy Saver worksheet.
- Costs come from cost guides, with the year. We quote ranges from Fixr, HomeGuide and Angi and say which one each number comes from.
- Code points come from the code body or a regulator. Relief valve discharge rules come from the International Code Council. Local codes vary, and we say so.
- Maker claims are labeled as claims. When a maker says a part lasts longer or fits a range of tanks, we say the maker says so.
- No scores, no star ratings, no prices. Prices change daily and we have no test data to score with.
- Uncertain means we say so. If a number could not be confirmed from a reliable source, it is not on the site.
How the site earns
Some links go to Amazon with our affiliate tag. If you buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we recommend. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page.
Safety
Water heaters combine scalding water, high pressure, gas and 240 volt power. Our guides flag the risky steps. Gas line, venting and electrical work belong to a licensed pro in many places, and permits are often required for a replacement.
Who we are
Water Heater Tank is operated by WellTracked, a small publisher of independent guides. We are not affiliated with any water heater maker, parts brand or retailer.
